Re: Harp-L-Digest/QUERY.

Gordon's post was aimed at someone else, but I'll jump in with a reply of my
own.

The only difference between the original harp-l and the new digest is that the
digest sends you a day's postings collected in a single file. You may have
noticed that someone posted a way to do this yourself using "standard"
commands in your mail program. The digest just saves you the trouble. The
volume of mail you receive will be the same, you just won't see the notes as
soon as they're routed through the server; you'll have to wait till the next
morning, when you get that day's digest. (Actually, you probably could stay up
late and read them; it probably gets sent out some time between midnight and
8 AM.) As I said in my original request, the digest is better for me because
I'm on the net throughout the day, and the posts to this group tend to be
more interesting than what I'm supposed to be doing. The digest removes the
temptation to take "just a second" to read the latest goodies.

As to this list being more civilized than the notesfiles, there's a good reason
for it. The people reading these notes are here because of an interest in the
subject, so you can expect the tone to be that of friends, even during
disagreements. "Out there", you run into loons who are reading the notes just
because they found the group, and that random element can (and often does)
contribute a lot to the level of flamage out there. Just watch: With Spring
classes getting started, the children will be making up for lost time spewing
their nonsense-- which computer is best, which don't deserve to exist, and all
that. (The answer, of course, is that you should all have Amigas. If you
choose not to, you're more than welcome to your own opinion :^) Just sit back
and enjoy the quiet.
