I can't say enough good things about the Marantz variable speed
recorder.  It is the key that unlocks complicated riffs.  At reduced
speed phrasing becomes much more apparent, and you can savor the shape
of bends and the fleeting appearance of double stops.  The rapid
reverse, which works while the recorder is running, allows you to zip
back and replay as little as two notes, time and time again.  It's
like a magnifier or even a microscope. And, of course, you can adjust
the pitch precisely. I believe it works on the principal of reducing
the voltage applied to the motor, i.e. motor speed is proportional to
voltage.  These recorders cost about $235 through mail order, e.g.
Home Spun Tapes.  I use it with earphones in my car.

Once again, about playing at the wheel.  For God's sake manage your
playing for safety.  As a survivor of a four car crash in which two
people died I will always be bothered by the nagging thought that some
small inattention of mine may have contributed to one of those
fatalities. [I was not playing at the time.]  Such calamities happen
entirely beyond our control and when they do, marginal factors may
spell the difference between life and death.
