Re: Reed sound, where does it come from?



The end effect of reed pipes, recorders and various other instruments is 
well known   (I had to cut a hole in the ceiling above a church pipe organ 
which i reinstalled in College  in order to allow the thing to speak at 
it's correct pitch, the pitch was flattened :))

The same sort of thing happens, especially with the higher reeds  on a 
harmonica... when you enclose the reeds with cover plates the pitch is 
altered slightly... more on some harmonicas than others.   I have to admit 
that I haven't experimented to find out if it is the volume of air under 
the covers or the proximity of the reed to the 'roof' of the cover or a 
combination which does the trick... but it happens.   It is a Royal Pain!
