Dan,
Tone and response can be greatly improved with tube changes as well as 
speaker changes to any amp....however the greatest amount of tone change or 
response will always come about through your playing and understanding of 
music. Always remember that as a musician you have the ability to achieve the 
tone you prefer through diligent practice and not by leaning on technical 
stuff such as your equipment. A prime example is BB King. He does not carry 
an amp with him all the time. He requests an amp to be there and plays 
through what shows up and sounds consistent from show to show. Great players 
will always sound great no matter what they play through. There is no magical 
amp out there that will make anyone great. A good ear, love of music and hard 
work will start you down the path....
