Re: [Harp-L] Little Walter perferomance video clips due out 9/31

Glad to see these Little Walter clips are finally getting a legitimate release! After about 5 years of detective work, I discovered these clips - uncredited as Little Walter, by the way - within a program called "Blues '68" in the Danish National TV archives about 10 years ago, and paid very dearly to have them dubbed from the original master to VHS. I enjoyed them immensely of course, and was able to brag to all my harp-aholic friends that I had the only footage of LW, but the folks at Danish TV were VERY clear about the fact that I couldn't do anything with them legally other than view them for my own research purposes, so I never made a single dub for anyone for years - all I ever did was show them to friends. Then a couple of years ago Danish TV opened up their archives and began licensing some of their MANY amazing music programs from the '60s and '70s, and at that point a bootleg copy of the LW clips made its way onto eBay, from where it's been pretty widely distributed ever
since. But presumably the folks at Reelin' In The Years Productions, who are releasing the DVD, are doing the right thing as far as licensing and royalties are concerned, so it'll be nice to see this stuff legitimately released - finally.

BTW, as far as transcibing solos, there's really not much there that lends itself to transcription IMO. Of the two songs that feature LW, he doesn't solo at all on "Wang Dang Doodle" with Koko Taylor; on the Hound Dog Taylor song, there are two choruses of harp, but he's really playing more "groove" oriented stuff (bring this back to an earlier LW thread...), even on the solos. The notes themselves, and the order in which they're played, aren't all that groundbreaking or complex - but the phrasing and the groove are outstanding, and unlike anyone else. And I'm not sure that any of that can be transcibed or notated.

And backing up what Bob said (and apparently Charlie Musselwhite too), this stuff is another example of something I've been saying all along, including in the other recent LW thread - that LW was playing really interesting, unique harp all the way up until the end.
