Re: [Harp-L] The Vocal 300 by Digitech...options!

live gigs... I should note, that although I'm a singing Harp

really setup up a vast array of presets. BUT, if your looking for
the Cotton/Butterfield Tone than the AMP is still your best bet."

Richard Hunter says: I've been using the Digitech RP200 -- which is an
amp modeling floor unit designed for guitar players, as opposed to
vocalists -- for a couple of years now, and I find that it works very
well for "amped" harp sounds, as well as for lots of "clean" tones with
chorus, delay, phaser, etc. that are excellent for "general business"
type gigs. It nails "Blackface" Fender amp-type tones perfectly -- its
ability to reproduce "Giant Step"-era Taj Mahal sounds is amazing. It
records beautifully, too, either mic'ed off an amp or straight to tape
from the RP200's line out.

Rob P adds:
"I should also mention that the Vocal 300 is NOT a "Plug in and
Play" type pedal, it is a processor and requires intial setup and
some homework in 'sculpting' your desired sound efx. But the beauty
is after you've done this, your sounds can be called up on the gig
with a tap of your 'foot'....of course having a cat like Randy in our
corner sure helps to take the mystery and intial scare away!!!"

This is all true. I spent about 40-50 hours setting up my RP200 with 40
good-to-great sounds that were immediately gig-ready. With that done,
I've got a unit the size and weight of a hardcover book that I can plug
straight into the PA or recording console for a killer sound on any gig.

Those who'd like to save themselves a little time can check out the four
preset sounds I've provided for RP200 users at my website at:
http://hunterharp.com/effectset.html

Print those out, take the paper and your favorite mic to your local
music store, and dial the setups into the RP200. Try the unit through a
PA or keyboard amp and see what you think.

Harp players who are struggling to get a half-decent sound from lame
amps that they hate really ought to take a close look at one or both of
these things. At $150 new for an RP200A (the latest model) or $200 new
for a Vocal 300 -- and half to two-thirds of those prices for used units
in very good condition -- they're certainly cost-effective. Where else
do you get 40 great amped or vocal setups for $150? It's a lot easier
to haul around than 40 amps, too.

Note also that the Behringer V-AMP2 -- a similar unit to the RP200, and
well-reviewed by users at harmonycentral.com -- now sells new from
musiciansfriend.com for $99. Are we getting cheap enough yet?
