[Harp-L] Norton Buffalo on Chromatic

Most know of Norton through his touring w/Steve Miller band as sideman, duo w/Roy Rogers and the session work he has done for Bonnie Raitt, etc. Some were fortunate enough to get a taste of his extreme talent at SPAH in Dallas.

Norton has an original project with his wife, Lisa Flores, and David Aquilar (acoustic guitars and vocals). They occasionally play small venues on the folk/blues circuit. "Norton Buffalo and Friends" came to Tampa last Sunday night and played at a small church. I was invited by Norton to be one of the "Friends" on this gig.

Once again, Norton reminded me that he is one of the best all around chromatic players in the world (and not just that 2nd position chromatic blues). The problem is that, unless you are fortunate enough to see this project, you wouldn't know it. Therefore, if he brings this show to a small venue near you, GO.

The music is mostly original, - blend of americana, cajun, country, folk - exquisite three part harmonies (Norton is an excellent singer) and tight arrangements. A CD of this project is in the development stage.

This is not mainstream pop or blues music. It falls into that catagory of "Music deserving wider exposure and recognition".

Also at this show I met Rick Hatfield, another "Friend" of Norton's, who opened the evening w/guitar/vocal/harmonica on rack playing. He's very good at the blinding high end "Popper" technique, is a creative song writer and has good stage presence. I hadn't heard of him before. He is another of those "unsung local heroes" that is deserving of a wider harmonica audience.
