I'm sort of wondering what the state of the art is for playing the low register. I am thinking of bent notes for example the bends on hole 2 and 3. How cleanly can the bent notes be played on a C or Bb harp. Can one play these notes with a gentle attack? is it possible to play the 3 hole draw bent three steps without distortion? What about the 2 hole?

Using higher keyed harps should help reduce distortion but is this a cheap workaround or a necessary approach?

Is this a worthy goal (on a C or Bb harp) or is this futile?

Pierre.

PS: Anybody know any sweet gentle tunes played in the low register?

We'll I certainly no expert but the thing that has helped me the most is to hate the sound of the harmonica. Most of my time learning was trying to play like other instruments. I am much too lazy to learn another instrument and since I could only play our wretched little gem I forced myself to sound like a sax, voice, flute, tabla, sitar, anything but a harmonica. I don't know if that makes sense but it does to me.

I think musicality is also helped by being impetuous. However, that's not really a learned trait. You need experience years of brow-beating and otherwise feelings of being downtrodden.

Dear New Friends, I have come to the conclusion that most of the people who write
to this
site are fairly accomplished musicians and then there is a smaller
share of
'newbies'. I got to thinking that wouldn't it be a great help to
the newer
players if the experts could just write in once in a while with the
one tip
that helped them the most. I think harp players are like country
music
stars...they enjoy helping each other to greater heights. If some
one I
know is just getting started, I love giving them favorite web sites
or
helpful tips that took sooooo long for me to find out on my own.
My one tip might be...swallow often, so the harmonica does not
get
'hoarse' with saliva. Being an older lady, it just wouldn't look
right if I
spit frequently ;-).

Have a great year,
Thanks in advance
Gail
