Do a Google search for Audacity, a wonderful *free* recording and audio
editing software package.
If you want Audacity, here is my recommendation. Run it under Linux. You
are going to need to install Planet CCRMA ccrma.standford.edu/planetccrma.
Take an older box, maybe p3 with 256 ram or so, and install Planet CCRMA's
version of Fedora 1 Linux. You could dual boot it on your main machine, but I would
advise against it, especially if you are new to Linux. Whatever your choice,
you should really spend some dough and upgrade your soundcard from the
cheapie that comes standard. Anyway, once you have Planet CCRMA, you will have more
recording and editing software than you will ever know what to do with,
including Audacity. This is why you should go Linux and not Windows. If you had
to pay for all the stuff that comes with CCRMA, you could not afford it! I
assure you though, this will not go problem free. Be ready to work at any
problem that comes up. Feel free to e-mail me off-list, and remember
www.google.com/linux is your friend.
