" I attend an Old Time Fiddlers Convention in Galax, VA every August and play in ensembles that always includes fiddle, banjo, mandolin and guitar. Except for guitar, all of these instruments are much louder than the harmonica. "

The loudest harmonicas I have found to cut through the " Epiphones , Guilds , Martins , Gibsons , Takamine's & other instruments that have a strong and loud presence for acoustics instruments are these harps :

Old Stand By , Golden Melody from Hohner .

The Huang Star Performer is very similar to the Golden Melody .

On my father's side of the family there are literally 100's of musicians and the majority play guitar , then the violin , and piano . When I was playing with them I was always trying to play loud enough to be heard by others in the group because when they were playing as I was , the major complaint was that , " I can't hear the harmonica " by many in the family ( both the musicians and the listeners would say this ) when I participated with two or more guitars and or combinations of them with piano and violin's . After I learned the way to trick out my " Old Stand By's " I was always heard evenly with the others when I joined in and played .

The Hohner Golden Melody and Huang Star Performers to me sound very similar in tone characteristics and loudness .

Learning to play loudly is no real biggy to do , it just a trail and error issue to learn the breaking points of these harps as far as getting the correct volume in loudness verses the harps life span .

I switched from the Hohner Marine Band & Blues Harp at that point to the Old Stand By . I first learned of the Old Stand By from seeing James Cotton live here in Palm Springs Southern California using them in 1964 , I noticed that the covers on them had been modified , later that evening I got to talk to him that night and he showed me a few things about how he had these harps set up , from there I learned on my own ( as he mentioned he did ) . After few years ( maybe 10 or 12 ) I saw Mr. Cotton again and this time I saw him using what were the first issued Golden Melodys from Hohner , once I used them I stopped using the Old Stand By because the difference in maintenance was minimal in comparison , and like I have said before , I don't really want to spend time working and tweaking harmonicas , I want to spend my time playing them as much as possible . I do really appreciate those who do make it their issue to improve and tweak harps as I have learned much from them and w!
e as a harmonica community owe allot to for the improvements we have seen in the last 20 years because of these people and their hard work .
