RE: [Harp-L] re: Popperularity vs. Quality

Popper can play the blues. Saying he is not a good musician is ridiculous. Have you seen him in concert? I played harp for a jam band for 2 years and it was a lot easier to get along and get gigs than in a blues group where the fan base is limited, even in a town like Peoria, IL, and the egos are giants. Not only that, but in the Jam Band, Kynetyk, we played some of the best blues I have ever heard and really funked it out. So Popper may not be the best harp player in the world, he's not Sonny Boy I or II, but he is still skilled beyond your imagination and I am not one of his fans. I like his band, but his harp style doesn't suit me. And I still think he is incredibly good.

" Jim,
On one level I agree w/ you it's nice
that a harp player is getting recognition and has
obviously developed his craft. It's quite another
thing to say that because someone has sold many
records that they're good. Pat Boone's version of
"Tutti Frutti " outsold Little Richard's . I
challenge you to find a musician to say his version is
better.
Hence, my previous "MacDonald's " remark. MacDonald's
sells billions of burgers but does that make them
superior
to French Cordon Blue cuisine or other excellent
culinary styles including Mexican and Indian ?
To me blues is similar: it's been around over
150 years so it's really a cultural entity of
substance . Lots of people (especially American ) like
fast food, ditto fast music . The
only question is , "Why do I try to rearrange the deck
chairs
the Titanic ? " No wait, lots of young people love the
blues
music or any art form of quality . I 'm not that
cynical . Now
if we could just do something about that global
warming ....
                                             Onward
and upward,

Chris " Hammer " Smith

ifif or on only

"

I don't often post but over the years and MANY threads about JP two points are often missed

1. JP is NOT a blues player and dose not claim to be, Blues Travaler is NOT a blues band they are a JAM band much like Phish, Steve Kimock and Rusted Root.

2. JP attended and graduated from NYU jazz program in New York City playing harp.

Also the Little Richard vs Pat Boone that was marketing the versions sold and appealed to two very differant fan bases. Thats making money not music.
