I just got an email from my friend in Spain, Sergi Escriu Mateu, who used to play guitar in my band when he was in London. Sergi is a wonderfully dynamic player for whom the whole sound of the band is most important. He can also kick ass when he wants.
This is what he wrote: I m doing a few changes in my amp want to put a Jensen Alnico speaker and I changed a prev VAlve 12 AXT for a 12 AY7 This way I can get the power from power valves cause the amp needs more volume to get hard tone.

Wow! For years guitarists have been telling us they need to drive the amp to ear-splitting (damaging) levels to get the right tone. Here's a guy who's taken a leaf out of the harp player's book and drives his power valves with less initial gain from the pre-amp valves. Way to go Sergi. Please come back and save UK's hearing!
