Re: [Harp-L] question

Hi Mike,

> Anyone know what sort of element is in this mic SHURE BROTHERS MODEL CA80C?

i've never seen a CA80 model. I bought a CR80 with a black label CR, a 510C
also with a black label CR, and a CX80E with a crystal element similar to the
R7, but unfortunately it's not a removable element with a round shell. It's a
tin plate, with a mold pressed in, and in the mold is all the inner stuff of
the mic, and the diaphragm is on the front, without a cover. The tin plate
has a size of about 1,5" by 2,5" (or something like that). The tin is so
thick, you can't cut it with a heavy scissor or similar. Maybe with a saw, i
didn't try it, but then you have still the problem with the open diaphragm.
I'm an electronics expert and ham radio man, and usually i do all by myself,
also to construct or modify tube amps, but when i saw all that, i decided
not to kill the element and so i left it untouched and had the mic as a gift
for a good friend of mine (a collector).
The black label CR elements are the well known type, and that's a cheap way to
get one, since this kind of mics is usually sold much, much cheaper in Ebay
than the elements...

Ralf
