[Harp-L] SCAM not SPAM

Hi Everyone,
I guess everyone who teaches music has been getting SCAM emails.
Spam is where they try to sell you something you don't want but Internet
scams are designed to cheat you. They rely on you being greedy enough to
take the bait. The teaching scam is where a child must travel to study
with you, and they want to pay you allot of money.
It probably involves someone sending you a bank check that looks real and
you depositing the check and returning some money to them or a third
party. Several weeks later the bank check turns out to be fake and you are
out the money you sent back. It is a variation of a number of similar
scams, including a lottery scam, involving fake bank checks that look
real, and the victim sending some of their own money to someone.
Has anyone actually fell for this? Since I always delete these emails I
don't actually know what the next step of the scam is.
I believe that the guy looking for a teacher in the Plilly/DC area may
have not been a scam, but a real attempt to find someone a teacher.
All the best,
Bob Meehan
