Re: [Harp-L] best of pigpen

I'm sorry. I didn't mean to offend. The silence part was rhetorical excess in search of a cheap laugh. Anyone can like Pigpen. I'm actually neutral about the Grateful Dead and I don't want to have a drawn out argument over a matter of taste. I'm right, of course, but I wouldn't be surprised if someone else thought I was nuts.

I could be wrong, but AFAIK the Grateful Dead never had a singer that could carry a tune and I'm not talking about occasional notes that were a little off. That's my objection to the vocals. I've seen them live more than once. The instrumental parts were fine.

BTW, you should see what reviewers on Broadjam have said about my vocals. Some of them were a lot more negative than what I said about Pigpen. Others were neutral and a few liked them. My favorite negative one was "This is blues, not opera." Weird, I don't care much for opera. The Dead have sold more records and played more large venue concerts than I have. (Not hard to do, but they put up some impressive numbers.) They must have appealed to a lot of people.

It's a matter of taste, but wouldn't the best of Pigpen be like the John Cage piece that's nothing but silence.

now, that was uncalled for. clearly the fact that someone went to the
trouble to assemble this indicates that some people feel otherwise. simply
stating "i don't care for this music" would let us know how you feel,
without belittling the efforts of those who do. i posted it for the benefit
of the folks on the list who like the dead, of which there are a few.

The one thing the Grateful Dead always lacked was a competent singer.

in fact, they had several, though perhaps not to your taste.
