Simplest description of triplets:

Remember the old cartoons that would poke fun at operas? (Like Bugs Bunny).

There was an operatic song used where the male would sing "Figaro. Figaro 
figaro figaro figaro fi-ga-ro."

Well, "Fi-ga-ro" is sung as a triplet.
