i *only* use soundstudio to transfer and convert the files, and
only as a Necessary Evil.  i've looked for open source conversion 
tools, but no luck so far.  if i could at least find the atrac specs,
i'd write my own.  but sony persists in bein so incredibly stupid
about this that they'll doom their own standard to obsolescence.

as i mentioned in another post, i don't think you can go very far wrong here.
