I tune harps as a sideline and removing material does change the pitch. However you should be careful not to scratch to the side as this can leave burrs which can cause an obnoxious buzz or misalign your reed. As for six times (scratching) you should carefully remove a small amount of material at a time and re-check the pitch often . Once you take it off you can't put it back,which can weaken the reed . I usually use a very sharp exacto type tool for removing material. Lenny the tunesmith

Never tuned a harp before and I am wondering, on the above page the author says you scratch the reed 6 times (whatever) and that's it. Does material really fall off, I would have thought that would just create a tiny gully without removing any material?
