Whether I encounter vocals or instrumentation or any mixture of them, I would find any combination of them equally captivating (if played well) and never stand in judgement of what that mixture might be.  I expect that if I choose to see a performance, I am ready to enjoy whatever is thrown at me.  I'll head for the door when it's over.
  
Furthermore, Davis, Segovia, Coltrane, Monk, Gillespie, et al. (wherever they reside) are too busy with their music to be rolling over in their graves.
