Ken,

 I played rhythm guitar in a band that played a lot of Clash,The Jam & Ian
Dury
in the mid 80's.  Also a Southern Rock thing.(Talk about conflict!)

 Of course, I secretly listened to  my old Yazoo blues vinyl at night


The more you know can only help communicate in the music language.
A quick music theory class at the local Jr. college is always a good move.
Even the music slang like: 3-legged dog shuffle,Count Basie ending,
2-5-1 jazz, yelling for stops, etc, only works with players who know the
genre.
