RE: [Harp-L] Help with Modes...

Guy,
That song is probably what is know as a MODAL tune. Meaning:
All of the chords in the song are in the scale.
D DORIAN is C MAJOR (IONAN), thus the C harp.
D E F G A B C D

So: available modal chords are
D min7
E min 7
F Maj 7
G7
A min7
B min7b5
C Maj 7
of course the simple 3 note versions (triads) of these chords are also included.

hope this helps--keep using your ear along with this and any new knowledge, it works well.

Hey List,
Is there a simple explanation for modes? I'm an intermediate player who
usually plays in 2nd and 1st position. I just don't uderstand modes: 3rd,
4th, Dorian, Mixolidian, Martian , etc...it's all very daunting. I was
jamming with some friends on "Straight On" by Heart which is in the key of C
min. The D diatonic fit like a glove. I don't know why...it just did. I
assume it has something to do with modes???
Thanks,
- Guy
