Re: [Harp-L] harp amplification

Many say tounge blocking is the way to the fattest tone, but like you said by getting the harp way back produces fat tone, too. John Gindick mentions this as well (make sure you don't put me in the same atmosphere with his harp playing). You can purse and hit single notes with your lips almost to the other side of the harp.

Here's my take on it.
Imagine pursed lips making the straw, but the longer the straw is the thinner the tone will be. The harp needs to be so close to the open mouth that the straw is eliminated. Imagine a 1 inch diameter hole in a big steel tank and outside air coming and going at will. Now imagine that hole with a pipe screwed into it. The air tends to get more directed and not widened. Tounge blocking pretty much reduces all of the straw effect because the lips don't act like a straw.

Absolutely! I try to cram the harp as far back in my mouth as I can
stand. Seems like the farther back you have it, the more resonant the
tone is. You can hear it acoustic as well, it's just amplified
exaggerates it more (or should I say amplifies it).

Russ

rainbowjimmy@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx wrote:

>
> Practicing amplified last night, I found I got a better sound if I
> opened my mouth really wide and pushed the harp in a little so the
> mic was closer to the throat.
