Re: [Harp-L] 3rd Position Tunes

Actually, all except Scarboro Fair also play well in 4th position with no bending. Others for 3rd position are A Taste Of Honey, Take 5 (tho I prefer 4th for this), Work Song (ditto), Fever (yup), and lots and lots more.

It's easy to find good positions for songs. Ionian mode (1st position - C on a C harp) has the normal major "do re mi fa so la ti do" major scale. Mixolydian scale (2nd position, G on a C harp) is the same, except that the 7th note (ti) is flatted. Dorian scale (3rd position, D minor on a C harp) has flatted "ti" (7th) and "mi" (3rd.) Aeolian mode (4th position, A minor on a C harp) has flatted "mi", "la", and "ti" (3rd, 6th, and 7th).

Technically, positions do not equal modes. Fortunately, this won't matter until you need to know :-)

House of the Rising Sun is also an outstanding 4th position tune. I usually play it switching between 4th (mostly) and 3rd (sparingly).
