Smokestack Lightning is an excellent jam tune. You can have the rhythm  
section play real jazzy underneath and solo in Dorian, or you can have  
the band play really punk with lots of distortion and solo in Dorian  
like Ray Manzerak of the Doors. The words are so inscrutable you can  
yell anything you want and sound pretty close. It's fun to give it a  
Patty Smith "Gloria" kind of treatment.

The Grateful Dead did a lovely job with this song on Bear's Choice  
recorded live at the Fillmore East in February 1970. Man I miss Pig Pen.
