I agree. Close mic'ing is a relatively recent phenomenon, and many of the best records preceding the time when 12 track and higher recording came in are a blend of close and far mic'ing, or no close mic'ing at all. As Garry implies, a good room and good mics, along with a knowlegeable engineer, can make a terrific far mic recording.


The quality of the recording on the Howard Levy performance makes one suspect that it was done with a videocam mic.
