At Hohner in Germany, the plates come off the line and are fitted into a  
slot in which air blows. A small gap in the slot is moved so one reed at a time  
sounds. A master reed plate sits underneath, linked. Two sounds are created -  
one from the master reed and one from the reed off the line. The tuner 
listens  to the sound - if there are beats , they quickly score the tuneable 
harmonica  reed with a sharp tool and listen again. When the beating stops, both 
reeds are  in unison and they move on to the next reed.
 
It is all done very quickly - not much time spent on each reed, and  
virtually no time spent on gapping.
