YAHOO.Shortcuts.overlaySpaceId = "97546169"; YAHOO.Shortcuts.hostSpaceId = "97546168"; He's got a remarkable sense of time, he does this stuff where he stretches beats out into other beats, he does these penatonic runs that are simple as can be as far as the notes he hits, where most guys would hit a G and hold it for a couple beats, he'll hit four or five to get to G an octave lower, the way he times them makes them extremely funky and I just can't get it when I try to do it on harmonica or mandolin. I can hear a lot of blues influence when I listen to him... most of his blues came via Bill Monroe. Monroe is like a god in my family.
I remember back when I was a kid and I decided to study music seriously. We were at the music store in Birch River looking for me a mandolin, I'd already been playing harp for years, he gets this Gibson F5 off the wall, does all this funky stuff on it, his fingers worked much better then, I can still hear it in my head after all these years, it had that profound an effect on me.

As for the thing Iceman said about playing the wrong note and doing it twice... couldn't tell you how many times I've done that, then play that wrong note again so it looks like I meant to play it, listen to it on playback and it sounds fine.

He couldn't have been more right. I have drilled this in my sons, and Godsons head for about 10 years now. I always tell them that if you play the wrong note, but at the right time, it is much better than playing the wrong note at the wrong time. Of course the right note is what we strive for all of the time but still.........you get my drift.

Your Grandfather sounds like a cool guy dude.
