[Harp-L] Re: new Howard Levy DVD: Out of the Box Vol. 1

Wow. Wow wow. Wow wow wow. Is there anyone you has bought that DVD yet? I'm panting here waiting for a review... How detailed is the breakdown of the tunes? It would take me years to play some of that stuff even REMOTELY accurately but it seems really cool.... There aren't any teachers here so any instructional material I can get my hands on is gold.

Peace (wow),

Tommy D

Hey Michael,

Which was released first? Green Onions or Help
Me?

Pretty sure that "Green Onions" was first recorded
by Booker T & the MG's in 1962 on an album by the
same name. Sonny Boy II did "Help Me" as a single
for Chess in 1963 (with Bye Bye Bird on the flip
side). Maybe Tom Ball might has better info, but
that's how I figure it.

Any vote on why Sonny Boy gets away with what
seems to be a major third over a minor blues?

He got away with it because it sounded good on that song and there were no Music Theory Police to tell him he shouldn't. He played Help Me in 2nd position and could have made it more minor sounding, but I guess he liked it better the way he played it. I love the little chordal chucks he used. Great stuff.

But I'll bet you dollars to dougnuts he didn't
ponder the rules very much or even imagine that he
was breaking them... he just played what sounded
good to him.

I thought I would list it on harp-l prior to ebay: I'm going to do an even 700 with shipping. Which really means about 650.00 for the amp since I use UPS services and have to buy the packing. I never play any games with selling and I've done my share. If you go to Steve's website you will see the specs and my review which is posted. The amp is pristine and around 6 months old. It's been out of the apartment for one performance. http://stevesmic.tripod.com/ Hope you all have a terrific New Year. dennis

I first bought an F harp (Marine Band) when I first started 34 years ago, and I also thought it was a demon harp. But I was a country/bluegrass player back then and I learned to love the way it sounded; the way you could make it chirp on fast transitions.

I prefer the Lo F Special 20 for blues these days, but I still grab the old-school F sometimes and do my bad Charley McCoy imitations...

That's a great idea! If I can track him down I'll invite him to play and then make a pizza for him.

Robert,
you should invite Toots to play there. I saw him eat an entire pizza at a New York jazz club then
go on stage. I would hate to have to clean his harps.

Bob writes (snipped)
"I use the Lee Oskar toolkit and a Korg CA-30 chromatic
tuner. I want to get one of Bill's toolkits eventually,
so that I can do reed and windsaver replacements.

Regards,
Crazy ('bout harp!) Bob"
....Bob, for Reed replacement you will need tools of course, but Bill Romel sells self-stick Micropore windsavers very inexpensively (no tools required except a dab of acetone...and they're reusable as well)....packages of however many you want, fast and easy ship in an envelope. I bought 3 packages of 60 prior to Robert Bonfiglio's seminar...thinking I'd replace all of the valves in my old 280's....STILL haven't gotten around to it....but it's sheer procrastination on my part. As soon as I find time to take care of it, I'll do a review of them....I've heard only good things up to now....

one of the recent posts on what sounds good vs. the Music Theory Police
got me curious about the psychoacoustic basis of music theory. while
searching, i stumbled across some interesting online theory courses at cnx.org, including:

Understanding Basic Music Theory

Special Subjects in Music Theory
http://cnx.org/content/col10220/latest/

Sound, Physics and Music
http://cnx.org/content/col10261/latest/

i haven't been through all these yet, but they look promising.

Well, I'm going to the IBC to support my local buddies Krypton City
Blues Review (and harp-l's Mike Easton). Oh yeah, and to have a real
good time. I got a hotel room right at the doubletree on beale st where
the thing is based, and free flight using my points. I had some miles on
an old northwest airlines account that i've never been able to use, and
those miles were going to expire, and I had just enough for a round trip
ticket and memphis is on their route so it worked out perfect. Deja-vu
and off I go.
I'm not sure if I'll rent a car or taxi it from the airport. If anyone
else is going and doesn't have anyone to hang around with let me know.
So far I'm going solo. I already got my tickets on the IBC site. My
flight gets in around 1pm on Thursday 2/1, I'm flying back out at 8:40am
Sunday 2/4. Send me a note offlist if you are interested.

If anyone can comment on harp-centric acts there, I would like to focus
on those when Krypton isn't playing, and sometimes it's hard to tell by
the info they give you whether a band has harp or not.

Music came first (what sounds good, etc).
Music Theory came second, trying to explain how come what sounds good sounds good - Music Critics came third, trying to explain what was in the mind of the creator of the music.
A funny evolution, but I can't see it happening any other way.
Oh yeah - what sounds good has changed over the years based on what came first, how accustomed our ears became to the sound and how we started to stretch out and keep our ears interested.
As you already know, Music Theory is an inexact science and most "rules" are broken in reality.
