i spoke to a friend who is close to him last night. he says it was originally
from his mother, who played harp, and then from sonny boy II. when he was
9 years old she took him to see sonny boy, and he played one of sonny boy's
hits for him. he took him under his wing until he was 15 (16?), at which point
sonny boy gave him his band to take over.

i have no knowledge of this; but that's what he said.
