  I have to agree. For tube mic preamps, the tube that the designers used is probably going to be the best choice. Since these preamps typically only have one tube, there needs to be a lot of gain. In a tube amp, however, there are many tubes in play. Thus, swapping out a preamp tube in an amp can improve performance with harmonica by allowing for a wider range of volume control. This typically is not an issue with a mic preamp because almost all of them have an input/output gain that allows for controlling the amount of gain to output. This is something that tube amps generally do not have.
