Then why does Hohner have different size reedplates (not to

for replacements when they introduced the MS (modular series)?

Hi Ron,

the MS System was quite a bold experiment which Hohner tried out in the 80s,
with mixed results. From an engineering point of view, the precision level
they achieved with rivetting, gapping and tuning was remarkable.
Nonetheless, times have changed, and Hohner is getting better playing
harmonicas nowadays by assembling and tuning all reedplates, including MS
reedplates, by hand.

OK, so much for background. Now, the new MS System was a great opportunity
for Hohner to try out new things and methods, including stamping tools and
reed sizes. Therefore, a new set of reeds was created, with different
characteristics from the know "classic" set. It was believed then, that the
"classic" harmonicas would be completely substituted by the MS Series. That
hasn't happened. Both sets are now established, and have their fans in all
kinds of music genres, playins styles and technique levels. Of course, it
would be more simple for Hohner to have only one set of reeds, but, this
way, the players have a bigger array to chose from.

Cheers,
Fernando
