Re: [Harp-L] Excessive salivating (yuck)

Personally, my mouth gets dry too easily.

I've always noticed that a dry mouth is worse than a wet one for playing
harp, as far as I'm concerned. Only problem I've ever had is with alcohol
before a gig, and the resultant dry mouth. I've quit drinking alcohol at
gigs, and just drink water. A dry mouth makes you feel like your playing
harp after eating crackers, or surfing on sand. You just can't get anything
going. Weak reed response, weak tone, everything goes south when there's not
enough moisture to seal the gaps. That's why some old guys (me too) used to
dunk their harps before playing. It closes up the gaps, cutting down on air
leakage. If your saliva makes things sticky, maybe there's too much of
something foreign in it, like sugary stuff, or something.
In my opinion, the best thing for your playing is a moist, but clean oral
cavity.
