What kind of cable do you use when you plug directly into the amp?

Usually, a low-impedance microphone will have a XLR connection.

Usually an amp will have a 1/4" phono plug input.

Two different beasts.

Plugging into a mixer usually is done with low-impedance XLR to XLR cable.

Plugging a Lo-Z mic with XLR connector into an amp with Hi-Z 1/4" input
requires a cable adaptor.  I suppose you could just solder a 1/4" plug
[unbalanced] onto the end of a XLR balanced line, but it will suffer some
degradation.  That's why the Hi-Z/Lo-Z transformers incorporate a Balun
inside them.  Balun = Balanced to Unbalanced.

I use SM-58 [mostly] when using a stick mic, cable with low/hi transformer
and 1/4" plug for direct to amp.  I use balanced XLR when plugging direct
into the mixer [snake].  Low-Z will handle long runs of cable alot better.
Anything more than 25 ft or so.  That's why most artists will use Hi-Z mics
to an amp on stage, short run of cable, -  and mic the amp with a stick mic
and Lo-Z XLR cable to the snake, and a long run to the sound board.
