[Harp-L] Gary Primich - a small recollection

I met and hung out with Gary Primich and saw him play a number of
times, and once or twice shared a stage with him, and I was always
impressed with his playing. But there is something else that sticks out
in my memory.

Sometime around 1994 Gary called my telephone and left a voice message.
We had never met or spoken at the time, though I was aware of him. He
didn't say anything particularly memorable, it was just a way of
introducing himself. But what stays with me is the cadence of his vocal
phrasing. It was rhythmic and even courtly, kind of like Johnny Cash at
his most polite and elevated.

Every now and then a musician (or even a non-musician) strikes me with
the musicality of how he or she speaks, even in the most offhand
utterance - Jimi Hendrix and Betty Carter come quickly to mind. It's a
quality I greatly admire, and Gary, in that quick, casual phone message,
showed himself to be in that group.
