I use a Studio Projects VTB-1 tube preamp.  Pretty straightforward, not 
a lot of learning curve.  Input gain, tube blend, and output level 
controls let you set the amount of overdrive you want.  I use mine with 
a wireless receiver and a lo-z mic with an AKG snap-on wireless 
transmitter.  Let's me travel pretty light and set up pretty fast.
