Re: [Harp-L] YouTube - AFTER YOU'VE GONE-- shtreiml

Randy;
I'd say about a quarter of my record collection is jazz. While I'm no jazz player, I understand the harmonic progressions, substitutions, etc. I just don't think this sounded very good. I might add here that I'm no Levy fan either. He does play some nice stuff, but a lot of the time it sounds like what Toots was quoted as saying in Hunter's 'Jazz Harp' book: 'Look Ma! No hands!.

hard to make this clear. He is not doodling at all.

it is like viewing the water from the surface. You cannot tell how
deep the water is..........it might only be two inches or two hundred
miles deep.

Same thing with jazz. Those who do not understand jazz do not realize
there are complex chord changes going on and that a jazz musician is
navigating those changes expertly. He is playing the notes that
correspond to those changes and creating mini melodies on top. This
extraordinary level of musicianship is also similar to a pilot or race
driver operating and processing at top speed with total clarity and
command.

Perhaps if it were SLOWER you might be able to better appreciate the
genius of a jazz musician.

Great music is a very subjective term. However I have learned that the
more I learn about any subject, the more I am able to appreciate it on
a deeper level.

It ain't the blues but if that is all you like, there will be plenty
of blues music for you. I love it all.
