Fw: [Harp-L] Re: Fender Blues Jr Amps

Hello Scott "a lurker" here, first post, I've had a Blues jr. for a couple
of years and had it modded by Dave Kott, Greenbulletmics, he lowered the
bias, different tone caps, brightness adjustment, clean boost (activates the
2nd triode in V2 10% more volume), crunchy caps. I really don't know what I
just said. For a very affordable and quality job (I won't quote it because I
don't know what his prices are now). He gave and sold me a bunch of tubes
plus the other ones I snuck into the house, which turned my wife into a tube
widow in my quest to get the amp tuned in. I tried a 1965 jensen p12r in it
and hated it, don't know if it was the mods or the speaker, couldn't soften
up the edginess. When compared to a friends stock tweed limited edition Bjr
what I really noticed in it after the mods was its response to different
tubes, they had way more effect on the tone than the same changes on a stock
Bjr. I ended up sticking a c12n jensen in it, also and that has way more
response to the eq adjustments. Had some problems with a staticky sound with
my dd3 when I was running low gain tubes au-v1 ay-v2 ay-v3, Ive got ay-V1,
ay-V2, 5751-V3, now for the time being, gives it a warm crunchy and punchy
sound, took care of the delay problem I'm probably a bottom of the barrel
intermediate player Got 4 kids still at home and can't afford anything
boutique, but I love this amp.........Merry Christmas.........take care all.

I didn't know that, Mike. I'll try it. But an NOS Mullard 12AT7 sounds
kinda spendy. How much?

The Mullard NOS 12at7 works great in V1. It retains some of the punch of a
5751 or 12ax7 when compared to how a 12ay7 can really mellow out your tone.
In my research and experience, it is the only 12at7 that I would try
somewhere other than a reverb or phase inverter slot.

I am using that tube in V1 on the "Refugee" and "Whippin Post" clips here:

The amp I am using, an Allen Old Flame, has a master volume. It was just
over half way up here. When cranked, there is a lot more punch.

The 12AU7 tube is not interchangable with the 12AX7, even though they
share
the same pin out. The AU7 draws significantly more power and may stress
your power supply. I stay away from the AU7 when replacing AX7 tubes in
guitar amp to make it more harp friendly. Instead, I use the 5751 (my
favorite preamp tube for harp) or the 12AY7. Never use the 12AT7; it is a
horrible tube for tone. It is a different animal designed for use as a
phase inverter.
