Re: [Harp-L] Which Minor?

Chris,

Some great posts there. Don't overlook the "plain old" natural and
dorian minors - there are countless tunes using each. In terms of
playing them on diatonic harmonica, they are free as all the notes are
already there (if you bend holes 2 and 3).

Natural minor is very useful for minor blues as the I IV and V chords
that are derived from that scale are all minor. It's also used in
many folk tunes and more sophisticated tunes. If you don't like the
feel of playing in 6th position or want minor chords, you could try a
natural minor diatonic for the same price as a regular blues harp -
you get a natural minor scale in 2nd position.

Dorian is also used in many tunes, from Irish tunes to pop tunes to
Miles Davis' jazz tunes. This is also a freebie on the diatonic
harmonica - 3rd position.

You also have other "minors" available, such as phrygian and harmonic
minor, each of which gives its own unique flavour.
