[Harp-L] Imperfection, and my mojo (Abner Galdos)

..and Mojo Red (-he got the answer right, name yourself and you've
got to be it! :)
Mojo's fragile, but is always hanging around in the air ready to
add magic to a player.

I just have to share an experience from yesterday.
Calvin Oosthuysen has been coming around for some harp tuition for some
half a dozen times.
He's a prodigy, most riffs I throw at him come back in his replies
unaltered except for his personal slant on sound.
He'd never played music on stage anywhere before, and has only played harp
since Christmas, (4 months!). Yesterday the band I play with, Sippies,
had a gig in Pinetown at Lock Stock and Barrel, and Calvin came in to share
my mike for two numbers -totally unrehearsed.
His young lady sat entranced (Mojo source 1).
We introduced him to the audience, who were in a great mood (Mojo source 2),
and got him an intro applause (source 3) as a first time player.
He took to it like a duck to water, and the sound was good.
The band and particularly lead guitarist and vocalist made longer gaps,
and gave solid support (source 4). Calvin was able to bring out
"more than he knew". Timing was spot-on, and he was well-mannered in not
playing over anyone. (Amazing invention, the elbow :)
Heavy applause at the end topped Calvin's Mojo tank.

So Calvin got " Mojo for Africa " as we say, enough to keep him going
through flat spots to come, as they do.
I got a Cheshire Cat grin from ear to ear.
Also, I noticed a glint in the eye of "Stroh Dogs " biker band leader, it
looks like harp-starved Durban is getting a new player soon..

What a great pastime! Geoff Atkins
