Re: [Harp-L] Learning covers

YOU COULD ATTEND a few jams and without drawing too much attention to
yourself (use a recorder in the pocket out of sight) and take home an evening's worth
of tunes that are played.

Now if you want to ask BEFORE you start recording, and the jam leader says
you are allowed to record, feel free to set you recorder near the front of the
band. Otherwise, you'd best be unobtrusive about it.

Do this a couple of times so that you:

1. Hear what kinds of tunes are played and

2. have a recording of them so you have an idea of what tunes generally show
up at THAT jam and

3. Try to figure out what you would do the same or differently than those
already playing.

4. This could include playing the same music line that the guitar plays.

5. Playing the same music line that the bass plays

6. Imitation is one of the easiest ways to learn riffs and musical licks

This system might work with getting ready to play with a certain jam band.

If you want to be better prepared to jam with anybody, any time, any place --
you've got to listen to blues records, blues teaching materials (including
those designed for guitar or bass or piano) because you're going to be playing
ALONG WITH THESE INSTRUMENTS.

But all politics is local, and so is all music. You want to jam with the guys
down at the local bar, learn the songs they play down at the local bar.

If you get too ambitious, you may learn "Stormy Monday" but it may turn out
to be a tune nobody at the local jam ever plays.

Hope this helps,
Phil
