Re: [Harp-L] Digitech 200 and tight cup

I hope it doesn't sound like I'm splitting hairs, and I don't mean to hijack this subject, but I think it's important to use the proper terminology.

I prefer the term "good seal", rather than "tight cup" when teaching my students harp/mic technique.

The impression the term "tight cup" may communicate is a tightening and tensing of the hands, forearms, arms, shoulders, neck, etc. This is not conducive to good harp/mic technique and may affect musical expression. I teach my students to work on finding a comfortable grip that results in a good seal.

I hope this helps to answer Daniel's original question.

Thanks for understanding,
Ray.

Tight cupping is an effect all by itself. It helps you drive the mic

I am thinking of buying a Digitech 200 in the future to play through my
keyboard amp (or even a PA system). Assuming that the Digitech 200 is well
patched to emulate any of the well known blues tube amps, my question
is : How
critical is it to tightly cup the microphone ? <snip>
Thanks,
Daniel

Right on, Winslow. Nobody has (yet!) come up with the "tight cup"
digital effect -- where you can use the foot pedal to vary the
tightness of the cup. :-)
