Re: [Harp-L] Hohner CX-12 Jazz Chromatic

"Who Hohner is thinking will be buying at that price?"

It may be that Hohner are thinking that nobody will buy them at that price and they don't want them too because they are set up for a mass production/mass consumption type business model.

I think a lot of what Harponline does is despite Hohner rather than because of them. Some of the German contributors to the list may know more than me but I don't think it is set up as a conventional business, more like a cooperative set up by harp players for harp players. This means that they can do things like break down harps and sell parts in a way that might not make economic sense normally. It's a shame but because the weak value of the pound against the euro it's too expensive for me to buy much from them at the moment, otherwise I'd go there first everytime because I feel I should support them.

But then what Harponline does in relation to Hohner etc is only the service that Seydel are able to provide their customers as part of the normal course of events. There are salutary lessons from the decline of British manufacturing industry; new entrants to a market (which since it's relaunch, is what Seydel is effectively) have a potential competitive advantage because they aren't tied existing patterns of niche markets, modern communications technology, new patterns of distribution and labour relations blah, blah, blah...

It's a guess but I reckon that the boffins at Seydel are beavering away at something right now - a chromatic with the maintenance advantages of the CX12 with stainless steel reeds, maybe?

offer the cover for a similar price

Tom
