[Harp-L] internet and free music

Lousy home videos should be free and on the Internet. And yes they should
have rave reviews from adoring family members. A musician of Robert's
caliber should not have his life's work stolen and posted for free on the
Internet.

It becomes more difficult every year to make money as a musician. When Paul
McCartney decided to drop out of school and play rock and roll in Hamburg,
he wasn't throwing a career away. He could make more money as a musician
than his father made working regularly at the local ship yard. How would he
have gotten a start today? The Doors and the Grateful Dead were earning good
money before they got record deals and notoriety. There was a reason to play
music besides just love and dedication. Now bands play for free for
"exposure". I used to be able to play most weekends in a bar band during the
summer. Then it was monthly. Now it's only two or three times a year. Then
on top of it, you have musicians like Robert that have spent their whole
lives not just learning their instrument, but learning the business only to
be ripped off regularly thanks to the same media that is supposed to
democratize the business.
