I used the MS low D plates a fair bit in the 1990s when there was a hiatus in the supply of SP20 low D harps here in the UK. Frankly, they were awful, but I'm quite prepared to be convinced that that was then and this is now. You could always use an XB40 low D. Personally, I'm deliriously happy with the SP20 low Ds and I'm stickin' with 'em. They are brilliant harps, easy to set up to your own requirements, comfortable, and excellent value for money. MBs come in low D tuning but of course they have that timber middle and all those sharp bits. ;-) I've come across the occasional Hohner low D cheapie and a Suzuki one called Easy Rider. The latter comes in exciting electric colours, but that's where the pleasure ends, believe me.

Incidentally, I think the Bluesmasters are very good for the money. I worried at first about the fact that the reeds were spot-welded instead of riveted, but no worries, these harps seem to stay in tune and last forever. That's far more important to me than what materials they are made of (brass I should think). They don't come in low D, more's the pity. Come on, Brendan... ;-)

Cheers, Steve Shaw
