RE: [Harp-L] Jason Ricci Revue from Orlando Blues Society - OBBS

Nothing wroing with stating a preference. If Jason doesn't turn your crank (or Little Walter, or Toots, or whoever doesn't move you musically) who can argue otherwise?

I think what's contentious about the review that Larry cross-posted is that the reviewer hasn't done his homework on the subject of his review, and applies standards to the subject that the subject does not apply to himself, which is an abdication of the responsibilities of a good reviewer.

I have never weighed in on the Ricci mania, but it is refreshing to read a review from someone who's not gushing over him. While I wouldn't describe it as "Punk," and this certainly wasn't a useful review, I'm going to stick up for the old fart.

JR's music hits me like 70s-era Aerosmith. I don't have any use for that either. Anyway, while the majority around these parts go on about him like he's the second-coming of Sonnyboy #1, I don't really care for Jason Ricci or his approach to music.

OK, I did it. I'll be wearing my flame-retardant underwear today.

Jason Ricci & New Blood
Interesting evening, but this was not a blues show.ÂÂÂ
Jason Riccis persona is all Punk and his performance pretty much was in
that style. There were lots of young people there to enjoy it,ÂÂÂmore than
show up at some solid blues shows.
Jason, as well as he plays and as good as he is (and he is indeed extremely good) isnt playing the kind of harmonica that I would call blues. Some might like the Punk style, but for me the lack of meaningful syncopation or creative interplay cant be compensated for by simply playing louder and faster.
His Lee Dorsey cover, Everything I do Gon Be Funky (From Now On) was
a chance to break into something different,  but it wasnt very funky
.maybe screaming the lyrics isnt the best approach to Funk.
On the other hand
RJ Harmon, who opened the show, is a different story all together. His tuff interplay with his guitar player was really cool on the opening number.
Almost as gifted a player as Jason, but with a lot more potential, this young man was a sensation at the 08 Florida Harp Challenge doing Sonny Boys immortal Nine Below Zero note for note.
RJ has it covered both ways, the standards and an all new sound, a kind of jazz fusion with quick licks hammered out with his guitar player. Lots to like about this
OK,ÂÂÂso I sound like an old grouch,ÂÂÂbut is there an Orlando Punk Music
Society?
Can we promote the Blues and bring the tradition to new listeners?ÂÂÂMaybe
thats what was happening last night, I dont know.
Think we could get Jason Ricci to listen to some ofÂÂÂJames Cottons Band
doing Hold Me Baby with Jimmy Vaughn playing slide?ÂÂÂHe certainly
could play the hell out of thatif he wanted to.ÂÂÂ
Oh well,
Ford
