On the flip side, there are some great songs crafted to be played the same  
each time, like Whammer Jammer, which Magic Dick recreates mostly note for note (at least when I heard him play it over the years).

That's true to my ears too Larry....When I hear a great harpster doing their spin {but remaining true to the original licks} on a classic Instrumental like (juke, rollercoaster, whammer jam etc.) It usually is very>very enjoyable to listen too, except - when they stray away and try to add 12 or 24 bars of different licks to the *already established masterpiece*  and then all of a sudden "at least for me" something just ain't right and it seems to take away from the tune rather then enhance it....I'm sure this is not the case in ALL instances...
