[Harp-L] Re: RE Allegedly rubbish?

Hi Leonidas,

I understand your frustration. To which address did you send your e- mail to Hohner? Maybe your music store in Greece told you that there is no possibility to replace the harp because they couldn't be bothered replacing it themselves and then passing the complaint back to the distributor. As I wrote before, if an instrument has a manufacturing defect, Hohner (or their local distributor) is legally obliged to replace it.

However, things such as tuning problems happen with all brands, do not necessarily constitute a manufacturing defect and are often easy to fix yourself. I have passed your mail on to Hohner in Germany and they or the Greek distributor will contact you

i really love hohner harps. I have tried LO and some cheap harps but till now hohner harps are the best.
I those harps: 2 blues harp, 2 proharp , 2 MB ,1 SP20 . from those 1 proharp,1 MB , and 1 sp20, i had to open and try to fix them because they didn;t played well. 3 out of 7 is not good at all.

I also have a picolo that i think is not well tuned. But i cannot be very sure . it may be my lack of technique or something else because i only play for about 2-3 years. my problem is that my local store in Greece told me that there is no possibility of replacing the harp. That's what the importer told him. And my biggest problem is that when i sent an email to Hohner to ask their opinion about my problem with picolo harp, i never had an answer. Very strange and disappointing from a german company.

These are the reasons that i intend to try some other brands (i ll try hering and suzuki first and perhaps bushman or seydell next).

Hohner didnt seemed very professional to me.

ps. Sorry about my bad english,

I find the quality of these Hohner Classic models to be generally pretty good at the present time. I wouldn't play them otherwise. Of course out of the box harmonicas from all manufacturers may have fine tuning problems, some examples of any given model will be better than others and you might have the misfortune to get a lemon, but to imply that the above harps are of generally poor quality is misleading at best. My experience of playing them for nearly 40 years leads me to believe that the overall quality of the current Hohner Classic reed plates is the best it's been since the 1960s.

All Hohner harmonicas are sold under a warranty which covers
manufacturing defects, and if you purchase an instrument which is
genuinely defective then you certainly shouldn't hesitate to send it
back. It will certainly be replaced. However, what constitutes such a
defect is not always easily recognizable for the layman and I've seen
a lot of perfectly good harps sent back without due reason. We
usually replace them anyway.

I have yet to find a harmonica from any manufacturer (and I've tested
them all in the course of my work for Hohner) which I would want to
play out of the box. Factory settings need to be a compromise aimed
at satisfying the broad customer base. Personally I tune and offset
all my harps to my own preferences before playing them. I realize
this doesn't exonerate manufacturers from the obligation to deliver
the best possible quality from the factory, but I can only recommend
players to learn the basics of tuning and offsetting. It will empower
you to make the best out of your instruments so why not give it a try?

Steve
