[Harp-L] Re: Harp-L Digest, Vol 74, Issue 77

So very sorry to hear about Norton. I never met the man, but we had so many friends in common, and I really admired his wonderful playing.

Truly saddened. He was under appreciated for so much of the musicality he had to
offer. I had the good fortune of catching his own folk/jazz project at a small
church in FL, one of the most memorable shows of my life. He had a great spirit,
too.

Every time I see a thread regarding the Kinder AFB+ I wonder why I'm not as
smitten with it as everybody else. I think maybe I need to review the
instructions concerning how best to calibrate it because I usually feel that my
tone is being affected when I use the box. Has anyone else had that experience?
I hear clipping and a brittleness to my tone when playing through an AFB+--it
seems like it's more shrill, less full, lacking warmth. Truthfully, my solution
to feedback has been to play through a MMeteor, which at 50 watts gives plenty
of volume headroom without too much risk of feedback. I did play through the
AFB+ at band practice this week, using my Kalamazoo Model 2 instead of the
Meteor, and while I appreciated the elimination of feedback I felt that my tone
was made thinner. Any suggestions on what I might be doing wrong in using the
AFB+? Since no one else seems to complain about this problem--loss of desirable
tone when using it--I'm thinking that I'm doing something wrong.

I was fortunate to catch Norton Buffalo in concert twice. The first time was at
SPAH in Dallas, and he really shined. But the second time... I was in the San
Francisco area on business, and looked around for some harp. What do you know,
Norton is putting on an evening concert in a little town north of the city. It
was an intimate theater, seating maybe 200-300, and what a show! The first half
was acoustic, and the second half a full band, including his wife on violin.
Norton played both diatonic and chromatic, sometimes during the same song, and
keyboards as well. Musically, he did it all, from lyrical world music to blues
to show tunes to latin rhythms to you name it!

RIP, Norton, and thanks for the music!

Sorry to hear this, what a talent and beautiful person, we will miss him.

If you can find his two LPS "Loving in the Valley of the Moon & Desert
Horizon" (they released them back in the 90's on 1 CD, may be out of print
tho) GET THEM! I wore mine out, when I heard Norton play both Diatonic &
Chromatic on these 2 records I was convinced I wanted to play both axes.

I met him him backstage in NY back in the 90's at the Beacon theatre, he was
blowing w/ The Doobie Brothers and my Band was "Slo Leake" we open for them.
I had a nice chat with him and his music will live on forever...his work
with Bonnie Raitt and Kenny Loggins are unsurpassed! RIP Mr.B

Best, Rob Paparozzi

The foam is the same as that which throw away foam paint brushes used
for trim (I don't use them) are made from. They will actually break
down and become goo after about 7 years. A foam such as used to
insulate hot water tank pipes would be better. THAT material has a
life of around 11-16 years.

week. I do a
radio show from www.kfsr.org Go to the live audio stream. It should take you
there. Norton
was one of my favorites. God rest his soul. The show is on from 4-6pm pst.

I went to college in Sonoma and saw Norton countless times. I can
clearly remember telling friends he was "the best harmonica player in
the world". He was always nice to a 18 year old hanger on. As Rob
said, I am sure he influenced me to learn both diatonic and chromatic
harps.

This year I got to know him as a friend. We taught the Kerrville Folk
Festival Harmonica Workshop together. He was a great guy, teacher and
player.

I am looking at a picture I have of Norton, Rob Roy Parnell (the third
teacher) and myself.
We have no harps, but Norton is U blocking, of which he was certainly
the most famous of the style, I am tongue blocking and RobRoy is
puckering. I have another with me on bass and Brad Trainham on Chord
and Norton on chrome.

I am saddened but happy to have known him and shared the planet for a bit.

What a huge loss to the harmonica community. Rest in Peace Mr. Buffalo.

You know, i hadn't wanted to say anything before this, either, but
since Chicago Bluesman has brought it up, I've never liked what the
AFB+ does to my tone, either. And I'm pretty sure I understand how
to calibrate it.

I am very sad to hear this news. I met Norton in Berkeley many, many
years ago. Norton moved to Northern California a few years ago, and he
has been a great contributor to the small town of Paradise, where he
chose to live and participate. Those of us who live in the Northstate
will miss him. I can only hope that his dream of renewing the performing
arts in Paradise can be realized as a tribute to him.

"I dunno. That "nice bit of propaganda" feels like a weird comment.
Guess it's just your opinion or something. Perfect Imperfect

make up the terminology."

I didn't say you made it up. That doesn't mean it's not propaganda
and isn't relatively meaningless. Yes it is my opinion, I never
claimed otherwise.

Equal temperaments are uniform, no more no less. Calling it a
"perfect imperfect interval" is a nice sales pitch, but that's about
all.

I prefer to use non-weighted terms whenever possible. Beatless
interval instead of "pure" interval, for instance. This is an
example of that. It is all too easy to start to give value judgments
simply by using loaded terms. It leads to the assumptions like
JI=chord playing and ET=melody for the diatonic. The chords in
something like 7-limit JI will sound more smooth, but they aren't
necessarily better than those in 12TET, just a different musical
choice. They are no more "pure" or "perfect" than those in 12TET, so
I think it's best to avoid those types of descriptions. And
sometimes playing a melody in 7-limit JI which clashes with the
backing band might be exactly what the music calls for.
