the personal, recognizable tone of a player, any instrument, is not as much the tone of a single note, but how the player gets from note to note...at that point, the personality shows up.

and I suppose this becomes less a rule when you think about players who always growl, snort, or have a distinctive vibrato on that one note you happen to be listening to....

still, it's what's being done with/to the series of notes, not the tone of the note that makes a unique, identifiable statement.
