In fact a lot of players use overbows today. You just won't notice 
until you search for them. Just as an example Steve Baker (who is 
clever enough to stay out of this discussion) has been using overbends 
for quite a while now, and you'll never know until you tried to figure 
out what he's playing _exactly_. Like on ordinary bends you have to 
work hard on overends to make them sound good. 

I'm a  mediocre intermediate player. Every once in a while i try to 
play simple major songs in 8th position. The bends don't sound less 
scary than the overbends when they're in a such exposed position. I'm 
just lacking control and i know from other players that control can be 
obtained on these notes through hard practice - both bends and 
overbends. So if overbends (and regular bends) sound bad, especially 
when played exposed, it's not the fault of overblows but of players 
who use a technique they haven't really mastered the way they could.
